Fun with Compromises
By Enthusiast | on Friday, January 28, 2022
We bought the Oxford Edition which is better value than a standard version. The car is better built and tighter than the previous generation yet rides better. MPG figures so far has been dismal even when driven gently during break in period. One annoying feature is the transmission loves to shift to the highest gear whenever possible. The engine make very little power below 1500 rpm. You will be driving 30-40 mph around town in top gear. The engine vibrates horribly if you try to accelerate gently in city traffic. You are lugging the engine which may not be good for longevity. Putting the transmission in sport solves this issue but then MPG gets even worse! And you lose Stop/Start. I took it to the dealer and the mechanic said this is normal. I drove another 2-door Hardtop and it does the same thing. My salesman tells me that I need to step on it harder to avoid the vibration. My 2020 BMW 330 gets better mpg in town and on the Hwy compared to this MINI. I can't understand this. In the brief time I've owned this car, the cigarette power plug has already stopped working (just like the BMW, is there a pattern here?) And the tire monitor inexplicably tells me I have a flat tire when there isn't. Pressures were all at least 2 PSI above minimum for all four wheels. I forced a reset and that seems to be OK for now.… - 5.0
Still having fun!

If BMW made a go kart, this is it (in fact, BMW DOES make this car--says so on the door plate). Nimble handling, better than my 135i. The Cooper S is the same 4 cylinder engine that BMW puts in the 2 and 3 series, but it has to move a lot less sheet metal. Put the car in "sport mode" and it flies. Gas mileage isn't mini; I get about 38 MPG over all. The driving position takes some getting used to for sure, and I wouldn't take this on an extended trip (but it's the perfect car for a trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway!). No mechanical issues (knock on wood).…
